"Soul-Inspired Flight" — The Art of the Romantic Ballet

The Romantic movement of the 19th century impacted all the arts, but no other art form was as profoundly transformed by the Romantic movement as the ballet, and no other art form has continued to be so haunted by Romanticism into our own time.
Though the heyday of the Romantic Ballet occurred during the 1830s and 1840s, its legacy is very much with us. Masterpieces of the era, like La Sylphide and Giselle, are still performed all over the world, and Romantic innovations still play their part: ballerinas dancing on point in gauzy white skirts, creating the illusion of ethereal or supernatural beings, and ballet as a form of escape to a world of dreams, or to some imagined other time and place.
For this program, a richly illustrated discussion, enhanced by performances by gifted local dancers, will bring the Romantic Ballet to life.
